Throughout the world, marriage is regarded as a moment of celebration and a milestone in adult life. Sadly, the practice of early marriage gives no such cause for celebration. All too often, the imposition of a marriage partner upon a child means that a girl or boy’s childhood is cut short and their fundamental rights are compromised. The practice of marrying girls at a young age is most common in Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia. IWEI intervenes

IWEI recently intervened in the case of a young married girl who had been in labour for 3 days. On June 15, IWEI staff members on a visit to IWEI women centre in Ajingi were notified by the women who were in the literacy class that a young girl had been in labour for 3 days and her aged father had refused to permit the husband to take her to hospital.
