Faith and Enterprise: Stories of Women Building Businesses Across Generations

Across Kano and throughout history, women have played vital roles in shaping families, communities, and economies. From trading in local markets to building thriving enterprises, their work has long contributed to the prosperity and resilience of society.

The Kano State Women Economic Empowerment Policy was developed to strengthen this reality by creating an enabling environment where women can participate fully in economic life, access opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. As part of the WEE Catalyst Fund, funded by the Gates Foundation through the Albright Stonebridge Group, we worked with friends at Fable Advisory and the Center for Islamic Civilisation and Interfaith Dialogue of BUK, to support this vision by documenting and celebrating the stories of women who have long been driving economic growth in Kano.

Faith and Enterprise highlights an important truth: women’s economic participation is not new, and it does not stand in opposition to faith or culture. Across generations, and within the rich traditions of Islam and the cultural heritage of Kano, women have engaged in trade, entrepreneurship, and enterprise. Their stories remind us that economic empowerment is deeply rooted in our history, our values, and our collective future.

Through stories of both historic figures and contemporary entrepreneurs, Faith and Enterprise celebrates the resilience, creativity, and determination of women who have transformed ideas into opportunity. These stories show that with courage, community support, and the right policies, women’s enterprise can continue to flourish for generations to come.
